How to Keep Your Dog Entertained in Quarantine

I often talk about the importance of physical exercise in raising a happy, and balanced pup.  Dogs are just like people in that they need stimulation, they need to get out and socialize, and they need to be challenged both physically and mentally.

But as a result of the coronavirus outbreak, thousands of people across the country are in various states of quarantine and isolation… which means their dogs are too, making mental stimulation for our furry friends even more important than ever.

Below, I’ve broken down a few simple and easy ways to challenge your dog’s mind and keep them entertained:

  1. The hidden surprise

    • Any simple interactive toy with treats hidden in it that allows your pup to figure out the puzzle (e.g Kong) will do a lot of good to keep them occupied.

  2. Find the treat

    • Placing treats in hiding spots around the house teaches them to start utilizing their scent to find the treats rather than just relying on sight. Finding the treats themselves is rewarding for your dog, and the addition of your encouragement during the game can keep it exciting.

  3. Spotify Podcasts for Dogs

    • Spotify has launched personalized playlists aimed at pets, as well as a new podcast just for dogs. The podcast features "dog-directed praise and stories" along with soothing sounds and relaxing music. Spotify says if your pet listens it may "bark less and sleep more." There are also live streaming videos on YouTube that you can leave on for your dog to watch. These videos use stimulating images and music or sound to keep a dog’s mind occupied throughout the day.

Really any activity can be turned into a fun game that will keep senior dogs sharp, teach puppies good habits, and be a bonding experience with your pup!

Be safe! Stay healthy Brooklyn!
